CAF Officially Launches African Nations League

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially unveiled the African Nations League, a brand new annual competition aimed at showcasing Africa’s top national teams and players. The announcement, made by CAF President Patrice Motsepe in Rabat, marks a major restructure in African football, alongside changes to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) calendar.

What Is the African Nations League?

The African Nations League is set to be an annual senior national team tournament, designed to give CAF member nations more competitive fixtures outside the AFCON cycle. CAF describes it as a “world-class senior national team competition” that will feature the best African players, including stars based in top international leagues.

This competition is part of CAF’s broader strategy to provide more regular, meaningful football for national teams, increase exposure for African players, and boost commercial opportunities for the continent’s football ecosystem.

Structure and Timing

While CAF has confirmed the launch, the inaugural season is expected to kick off in 2029. The tournament will reportedly feature all 54 CAF member associations, organized into regional groups across North, East, West, Central, and Southern Africa.

Matches are expected to take place during FIFA international windows, with a finals phase determining the annual champion. By structuring the league this way, CAF aims to align with the global football calendar while reducing conflicts with major club competitions.

AFCON Calendar Restructure

The African Nations League is closely linked to CAF’s decision to move AFCON to a four-year cycle, starting after the 2028 edition. Previously held every two years, AFCON’s shift creates a gap in the football calendar, which the new league will now fill.

According to CAF, this ensures that African national team football remains exciting and competitive every year, keeping fans engaged even in AFCON off-years.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe highlighted that the league would offer “an annual platform for Africa’s best players to compete at the highest level,” reinforcing the continent’s growing influence in world football.

NAFDAC Clarifies Indomie Vegetable Flavour Recall in France, Says Product Is Not From Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has clarified reports surrounding the recall of Indomie Noodles Vegetable Flavour in France, assuring Nigerians that the affected product did not originate from Nigeria and is not registered for sale in the country.

A product recall is a safety action taken by regulators or manufacturers to withdraw a product from sale after it is found to pose a potential health risk.

The clarification follows a recall notice issued by French authorities under the Rappel Conso system, which raised concerns among Nigerian consumers after the news circulated online.

Why the Product Was Recalled in France

According to NAFDAC, the Indomie Vegetable Flavour recalled in France was flagged due to the presence of undeclared allergens, specifically milk and eggs.

The agency explained that these undeclared ingredients could pose health risks to individuals with allergies or food intolerances, prompting the recall by French regulators.

Recalled Product Not Registered or Sold in Nigeria — NAFDAC

NAFDAC stressed that the recalled Indomie product does not originate from Nigeria and is not registered by the agency for sale in the Nigerian market.

The agency further explained that noodles are listed on the Federal Government’s Import Prohibition List, making their importation into Nigeria unlawful. This restriction, NAFDAC said, significantly reduces the likelihood of the affected product entering the country.

All NAFDAC-Registered Indomie in Nigeria Is Locally Manufactured

In its statement, NAFDAC reassured the public that all Indomie instant noodles and other noodle brands registered for sale in Nigeria are manufactured locally.

The agency added that these products are approved only after meeting stringent regulatory requirements, including full compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards.

NAFDAC Intensifies Surveillance Nationwide

As part of proactive regulatory measures, NAFDAC announced that it has:

  • Intensified surveillance nationwide
  • Directed all zonal directors and state coordinators to remain vigilant and immediately mop up the product if found within their jurisdictions
  • Placed the Ports Inspection Directorate on alert to prevent any attempted importation of the implicated product

NAFDAC has advised Nigerians to remain vigilant and avoid unregistered food products.

Consumers are encouraged to report any suspected sale or distribution of the recalled product to the nearest NAFDAC office or through the agency’s toll-free line: 0800-162-3322.

Reports of adverse reactions can also be submitted via NAFDAC’s e-reporting platforms available on the agency’s official website.

NAFDAC has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring the safety of food products available to Nigerians.

The agency confirmed that the Indomie Vegetable Flavour recalled in France is not linked to products sold in Nigeria, assuring consumers that NAFDAC-registered Indomie noodles remain safe for consumption.

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Sets Global Box Office Ablaze With $345M Opening Weekend

James Cameron’s Avatar franchise has once again proven its box office power.

The third installment, Avatar: Fire and Ash, has debuted with a massive $345 million global opening weekend, officially becoming the second-biggest opening of 2025 so far.

A Strong Global Start

According to early box office reports, Avatar: Fire and Ash earned approximately $88 million from North America, while international markets contributed about $257 million, highlighting the franchise’s continued global appeal .

International territories once again played a major role in driving the film’s opening numbers, especially in key markets where the Avatar brand has historically performed well.

Second Biggest Opening of 2025

With its $345 million debut, Fire and Ash now ranks as the second-largest global opening of 2025, trailing only Zootopia 2, which currently holds the top spot for the year .

The achievement places Avatar: Fire and Ash ahead of several high-profile releases this year, confirming audience anticipation for the next chapter in Cameron’s sci-fi saga.

How It Compares to Previous Avatar Films

While the opening weekend is slightly below Avatar: The Way of Water, which launched with over $441 million globally in 2022, industry analysts note that the current performance still represents a very strong start, particularly given changing cinema attendance trends worldwide .

Box office observers expect the film to show strong legs in the coming weeks, especially in international markets where Avatar films traditionally enjoy extended theatrical runs.

The impressive debut of Avatar: Fire and Ash strengthens confidence in the future of the franchise, with additional sequels already planned.

Nicki Minaj Explains Why She Spoke Out on Reported Prosecution of Christians in Nigeria

American rapper Nicki Minaj has explained why she decided to publicly address reports of attacks on Christians in Nigeria, saying her comments were driven by personal ties to the country and concern over alleged violence against worshippers.

Nicki Minaj made the remarks during a surprise appearance at AmericaFest on Sunday while responding to a question from Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Speaking on stage, the rapper said Nigeria is a country she has long felt connected to, both personally and spiritually.

According to Nicki Minaj, her pastor is Nigerian, and she also has a large Nigerian fan base, often referred to as “Nigerian Barbz.” She said these connections made reports of attacks on Christians in the country especially troubling to her.

Nigeria is a place I’ve always loved,” Minaj said. “Someone very dear to me, my pastor, is Nigerian, and I have lots of Nigerian barbs.

She added that reports of worshippers being attacked during church services pushed her to speak out publicly.

So hearing that people are being kidnapped while they’re in church, people are being killed, brutalised, all because of their religion; that should spark outrage,” she said.

Nicki Minaj stressed that she believes speaking up is necessary, regardless of criticism. “We’re not backing down anymore. We are not going to be silenced by the bullies anymore. We will speak up for Christians wherever they are in this world,” she stated.

The rapper also spoke more broadly about religious freedom, saying many people take the ability to worship freely for granted. She noted that while some communities can openly practice their faith, others are forced to worship in fear.

We take for granted that there, right now in this world, are people who cannot worship God as they please, where they please,” Nicki Minaj said. “Every time we pray in fellowship, we have to remember the people that are right now in this world hiding to pray in fellowship, and we have to pray for them.”

Her comments follow an earlier social media reaction to a post by former United States President Donald Trump, who wrote on October 31 that “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria.” Reacting on November 1, Nicki Minaj said reading the post made her feel grateful for the freedom to worship in the United States.

We live in a country where we can freely worship God. No group should ever be persecuted for practising their religion,” she wrote.

At AmericaFest, Nicki Minaj also praised Trump and Vice President JD Vance, adding that Christians also face challenges in the United States, though in different forms.

Christians have been persecuted right here in our country in different ways,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government of Nigeria has repeatedly rejected claims that Christians are being systematically or officially persecuted in the country. Government officials have maintained that Nigeria’s security challenges affect people of all religions and ethnic backgrounds, and are linked to broader issues such as banditry, terrorism, and communal conflicts.

Despite the official response, Nicki Minaj insists her comments are rooted in concern for religious freedom and the safety of worshippers, saying she felt compelled to use her platform to draw attention to the issue.

AFCON: Morocco Beat Comoros 2–0 to Open Africa Nations Campaign

Morocco began their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a solid 2–0 victory over Comoros, sending an early warning to the rest of the continent about their title ambitions.

After a tense first half that ended goalless, the Atlas Lions showed their quality in the second half, scoring twice to secure all three points.

The opening 45 minutes were tightly contested. Morocco dominated possession and controlled the tempo, but Comoros remained compact and disciplined at the back. Clear chances were limited, and both teams went into halftime without a goal.

Despite Morocco’s attacking depth, Comoros frustrated their opponents with organised defending and quick transitions, forcing Morocco to remain patient.

The breakthrough finally came in the 55th minute, when Brahim Díaz found the back of the net. The Real Madrid forward calmly finished after sustained pressure from Morocco, lifting the weight off his team’s shoulders.

The goal immediately shifted the momentum of the game, with Morocco growing in confidence and Comoros struggling to regain control.

Morocco wrapped up the win in the 74th minute through Ayoub El Kaabi, who produced a stunning overhead kick to double the lead. The goal stood out as one of the early highlights of the tournament and effectively ended Comoros’ hopes of a comeback.

This win gives Morocco a strong start in their AFCON group, reinforcing their status as one of the tournament favourites. With attacking depth, defensive stability, and individual brilliance on display, the Atlas Lions will be confident heading into their next fixture.

For Comoros, the result was a tough opening, but their defensive discipline in the first half showed they are capable of competing at this level if they improve their attacking output.

Morocco 2–0 Comoros

Goals: Brahim Díaz (55’), Ayoub El Kaabi (74’)
