NIN Now Serves as Your Tax ID in Nigeria: What You Need to Know

Nigeria’s new tax law now allows the National Identification Number (NIN) to serve as the Tax Identification Number (TIN) for individuals. Here’s how it works and what it means for Nigerians.

In recent updates, the new tax law taking effect in January 2026, the National Identification Number (NIN) will automatically serve as the Tax Identification Number (Tax ID) for all individual Nigerians. This change, confirmed by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), is part of broader reforms aimed at making tax compliance easier, more transparent, and more efficient.

Previously, Nigerians had to apply separately for a Tax Identification Number (TIN) to file taxes or access certain financial services. With the new rule:

  • Your NIN automatically functions as your Tax ID.
  • You no longer need a separate TIN card.
  • All income tax-related activities will now reference your NIN.

This update applies to all taxable individuals, including salaried employees, business owners, and freelancers. Essentially, your NIN now acts as a one stop identifier for your personal, financial, and tax information.

Businesses Will Use CAC Numbers

For registered companies, the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number (RC) now doubles as the company’s Tax ID. This streamlines the process for corporate tax compliance and eliminates the need for multiple identification numbers.

How It Affects Daily Life

With your NIN now serving as your Tax ID, the implications are widespread:

  • Banking: Your NIN will be linked to your accounts for tax reporting.
  • Employment: Employers will use your NIN for tax deductions and reporting.
  • Business transactions: Freelancers and small business owners will now report income using their NIN.

If you don’t already have a NIN, it is advisable that you register as soon as possible through the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). Your NIN will now be essential not just for identification, but also for tax compliance, banking, and other official transactions.

Dead Poets Society is about an English teacher, John Keating, who inspires his students at a strict all-boys school to think independently, embrace creativity, and pursue their own passions. Through his unconventional teaching methods, the boys form the “Dead Poets Society,” a secret group where they read poetry and express themselves freely. The story explores themes of identity, courage, and the pressure of expectations, showing the impact of finding your own voice even in a restrictive environment.

  • Less pressure, more direction

This is how you avoid entering the new year with the same habits that held you back.

YouTube Set to End Data Sharing With Billboard in 2026

In a significant shake-up for the global music industry, YouTube has announced it will stop providing its streaming data to Billboard’s U.S. music charts starting January 16, 2026. This decision ends a decade-long partnership that helped measure song popularity and influence chart positions for artists around the world.

The move arose from a dispute over how Billboard weights different types of streams, raising questions about digital consumption, fairness, and how chart success should be defined in the streaming era. Here’s a breakdown of what this change means for artists, fans, and the music business at large.

Why YouTube Pulled Back Its Data

At the heart of the split is a disagreement over Billboard’s chart methodology specifically, how it assigns different values to paid versus ad-supported streams:

  • Billboard currently gives more weight to paid or subscription streams (like Spotify Premium or Apple Music) than to free, ad-supported plays.
  • YouTube argues this system undervalues listening behaviour on its platform, where billions of users stream music for free with ads.

In response, Billboard updated its formula for 2026 to make ad-supported streams count more than they did before (reducing the number of streams needed to count toward the charts). However, paid streams still count significantly more than free streams, and YouTube says this doesn’t reflect how modern fans actually engage with music.

YouTube’s global head of music, Lyor Cohen, called Billboard’s formula “outdated” and insisted that all streams paid or free should be counted equally for chart calculations. Because Billboard would not adopt this approach, YouTube announced it will stop submitting its data for all Billboard charts, including the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard 200.

Lyor Cohen

A Brief History of YouTube & Billboard Charts

YouTube began contributing data to Billboard’s Hot 100 in 2013, recognizing that video streams were a growing part of how people consume music. Later, its data was added to album charts like the Billboard 200.

Because YouTube reaches billions of listeners worldwide; especially in regions where paid subscriptions are less common, its inclusion historically helped songs chart higher based on popularity across video and music formats.

Now, with the partnership ending after January 16, 2026, YouTube streams will no longer factor into these official U.S. rankings unless the two organizations find a new agreement.

How Billboard’s New Chart Rules Work

For charts dated January 17, 2026 (tracking data from January 2-8), Billboard will adjust its streaming values:

  • 1,000 paid/subscription on-demand streams = one album unit
  • 2,500 ad-supported on-demand streams = one album unit

This narrows the difference between paid and free streams compared with previous years, but paid streams still count more per stream than ad-supported ones.

Under this system, a song must be streamed more times on a free tier to count the same as fewer paid streams, a key reason YouTube disagrees with the approach.

What this could mean for Artists

  • Chart Visibility Changes: Songs that used to climb based on huge YouTube view counts alone may now chart lower or not at all on Billboard charts.
  • Strategy Shifts: Labels may push artists toward platforms where plays still count fully for Billboard, such as Spotify, Apple Music, or other paid services.
  • Video Release Planning: Big-budget music videos might become less central to chart strategies, though they’ll still matter for engagement and reach.

Artists with strong YouTube performance particularly in genres like K-pop, hip-hop, Latin pop, and Afrobeats,  may feel the biggest impact, as many of their fans use YouTube as a primary means of listening.

For Fans

  • Streaming Choices Matter More: Streaming on paid platforms may have more chart impact than listening on YouTube alone.
  • Billboard Chart Dynamics Change: Fans who boosted songs to the charts via YouTube views might see different results going forward.

What This Doesn’t Change

  • Music Industry Certifications: YouTube streams will still count toward certifications like RIAA Gold and Platinum, which have their own criteria separate from Billboard charts.
  • Luminate Reporting: YouTube continues to submit data to Luminate (a major industry analytics provider), so labels and artists will still see full YouTube consumption metrics.

YouTube’s move isn’t just a technical shift in how charts are calculated, it’s a cultural statement about what matters most in music consumption today. Whether this leads to new chart models or renewed negotiation between platforms and publishers remains to be seen.

AFCON 2025: Morocco and Mali Share Points as Egypt Beats South Africa (Friday Match Day 2 Results)

AFCON 2025 delivered a tense round of fixtures on Friday, 26 December, with tight margins and shared points across the board. Egypt were the only side to secure a win, booking their place in the knockout rounds, while Angola, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Comoros, Morocco, and Mali all finished level in their fixtures.

The results set up a dramatic finish to the group stage as qualification battles grow tighter.

Angola 1–1 Zimbabwe

Angola and Zimbabwe opened the day with a competitive draw that keeps both sides alive in Group B.

A goal from Gelson Dala gave Angola an early advantage, but Knowledge Musona restored balance before halftime with a composed finish. Both teams pushed for a winner late on, but neither found the breakthrough.

Egypt 1–0 South Africa

Egypt were the only team to claim all three points, grinding out a 1–0 victory to become the first confirmed qualifiers from their group.

Mohamed Salah scored from the penalty spot to give the Pharaohs the lead, and despite late pressure from South Africa, Egypt defended confidently to protect the result.

Egypt hit 6 points and are through to the knockout stage.

Zambia 0–0 Comoros

Zambia and Comoros shared points in a match defined by defensive discipline rather than attacking clarity.

Zambia controlled more possession, but Comoros stayed organised and compact, frustrating the build-up and limiting clear chances.

Morocco 1–1 Mali

Two penalties decided the night’s headline fixture as Brahim Díaz and Lassine Sinayoko both converted from the spot in a tense draw.

Díaz struck first for Morocco, calmly placing his penalty into the corner to give the hosts the lead. Mali responded later with Sinayoko stepping up and firing home to level the match. The final stages were cagey, with neither side willing to risk losing the pointt. Now leaving the group remains unpredictable.

“Avengers: Doomsday” Predicted by Hollywood Experts to Be the Highest-Grossing Movie of 2026

Avengers: Doomsday – Marvel Studios’ next major Avengers film is emerging as the top pick among Hollywood insiders for the biggest global box office hit of 2026, according to a year end survey of more than 700 entertainment industry experts conducted by Bloomberg Screentime.

The poll asked industry professionals across distribution, production, exhibition, and film analysis to forecast which movie will earn the most at cinemas worldwide next year. Avengers: Doomsday was the most frequently selected title, suggesting strong early confidence in its commercial prospects.

Marvel’s Avengers franchise has a well-established track record of blockbuster success. Previous entries like Avengers: Endgame set historic box office records, making nearly $2.8 billion globally one of the highest total grosses of all time.

How Avengers: Doomsday Compares to Other 2026 Contenders

Although Avengers: Doomsday topped the expert poll, the 2026 film slate includes several other high-potential blockbusters that could break records:

  • The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
  • Spider-Man: Brand New Day
  • Toy Story 5

Betting-market odds and prediction platforms reflect this competitiveness: in some outlooks, Avengers: Doomsday trails titles like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in probability rankings for highest grossing film of 2026, even though it remains a strong prospect.

This highlights that while expert sentiment favors Doomsday, public and market expectations vary according to reports  and the box office race could shift as awards season and audience data roll in.

Forecasts from industry analysts paint 2026 as a potentially record-setting year for theatrical revenue. Independent box office forecasting suggests global ticket sales could reach roughly $35 billion  the highest total since before the pandemic.

If these predictions hold, Avengers: Doomsday could anchor a broader theatrical rebound driving attendance, strengthening franchise cinema, and affirming the continued value of big-screen releases fueled by the many speculations around the movie by the trailers recently released.
