Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights Becomes a Surprise 2026 Box Office Hit, Grosses $200 Million Worldwide

Wuthering Heights Becomes an Unexpected Box Office Hit in Early 2026

The new film adaptation of Wuthering Heights has turned into one of the early box office surprises of 2026. Directed by Emerald Fennell, the movie was released by Warner Bros. on February 13, 2026, just before Valentine’s Day weekend. Since then, the gothic romance has earned close to 200 million dollars worldwide, despite having a production budget of about 80 million dollars.

The film stars Margot Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff. Their performances helped attract strong interest from audiences curious to see a new take on the famous love story. The movie opened strongly during the Presidents’ Day weekend period in the United States, earning around 83 million dollars globally in its first extended weekend. About 37 to 40 million dollars came from the domestic market, while roughly 42 to 45 million dollars came from international territories.

The opening made it the biggest worldwide launch of the year at the time and continued a streak of strong releases for Warner Bros. Within its first week in theaters, the film had already crossed the 100 million dollar mark worldwide, meaning it recovered its production budget very quickly. This happened even though the movie faced mixed reviews and debate before release over its casting choices, costume design, and the more mature tone used in this version of the story.

International markets have played a major role in the film’s success. Around 63 percent of its total earnings have come from outside the United States. The United Kingdom has been one of the strongest markets, bringing in more than 22 million dollars. Other strong territories include Italy and Australia, where audiences responded well to the dramatic romance and visual style of the film.

By the end of February, the film had already passed 150 million dollars globally. As of early March, it is approaching or crossing the 200 million dollar mark. In the United States and Canada, the film has earned around 74 to 75 million dollars so far, placing it among the highest earning films of the year.

The second weekend saw a noticeable drop at the domestic box office. The film moved to second place after the release of GOAT, earning about 14.2 million dollars that weekend. Even with that decline, the movie continued performing well internationally and maintained steady ticket sales.

With a production cost of around 80 million dollars and additional marketing expenses, the film is already considered profitable. Its performance also places Emerald Fennell among the highest grossing female directors for a single film in recent years.

The success of this adaptation shows that audiences are still interested in dramatic stories aimed at adults, even at a time when family films and large franchise movies dominate the box office. As new releases such as Hoppers arrive in theaters, Wuthering Heights continues its steady run and stands as one of the early theatrical success stories of 2026.

Funke Akindele Becomes Africa’s Highest-Grossing Filmmaker of All Time

Nigerian filmmaker Funke Akindele has officially become Africa’s highest-grossing filmmaker of all time, following the record-breaking box office performance of her latest film, Behind The Scenes.

According to figures released by distributors, the film has now crossed the ₦2+ billion mark in cinema revenue, making it the highest-grossing film in Nigerian and West African cinema history. The milestone places Akindele at the top of Africa’s box office rankings, ahead of all other filmmakers on the continent.

Behind The Scenes, released in December 2025, opened to strong audience turnout across Nigerian cinemas and select international markets. Within weeks of release, the film recorded multiple box office milestones, including:

  • One of the largest opening weekends in Nollywood history
  • Fastest Nollywood film to cross several revenue benchmarks
  • First Nigerian film to officially exceed ₦2 billion in total box office earnings

The figures were confirmed by FilmOne Entertainment and other industry tracking platforms monitoring cinema revenue in Nigeria.

This achievement builds on Akindele’s growing reputation as Nollywood’s most commercially successful filmmaker. In recent years, her projects have consistently dominated the box office, including:

  • A Tribe Called Judah, which became one of Nollywood’s earliest billion-naira films
  • Everybody Loves Jenifa, which previously held the record as Nigeria’s highest-grossing local film

With Behind The Scenes surpassing all previous records, Akindele now holds the top three highest-earning Nollywood films in cinema history.

Akindele’s achievement is also being viewed as a major milestone for African cinema, demonstrating that locally produced African films can achieve large-scale commercial success without relying on foreign studios.

By becoming Africa’s highest-grossing filmmaker, Funke Akindele has further established her status as one of the most influential figures in the Nigerian film industry.

Toyin Abraham Breaks Box Office Records as Oversabi Aunty Hits ₦711.5 Million in Just 18 Days

Toyin Abraham has once again proven that she understands the Nigerian cinema audience better than most of her peers.

Her latest film, Oversabi Aunty, has officially crossed ₦711.5 million at the Nigerian box office after just 18 days in cinemas, marking one of the fastest-rising theatrical runs by a Nollywood title in recent years. The milestone places the comedy firmly among the highest-grossing Nigerian films of the year and further strengthens Abraham’s reputation as one of Nollywood’s most commercially reliable filmmakers.

Released during the competitive end-of-year cinema window, Oversabi Aunty opened strongly and maintained momentum week after week. Within its first two weekends, the film recorded impressive nationwide turnout, quickly moving from a strong debut into sustained box office dominance.

By the end of its third weekend, the film’s cumulative earnings had climbed to ₦711.5 million, an achievement that many Nollywood releases take months to reach.

What stands out most is not just the total figure, but the speed at which the film achieved it. In an industry where audience drop-off after opening weekend is common, Oversabi Aunty has benefited from steady word-of-mouth, repeat viewings, and wide appeal across multiple age groups.

At its core, Oversabi Aunty taps into a familiar Nigerian social archetype, the well-meaning but intrusive figure who always seems to know everyone’s business. The humour is rooted in everyday experiences, making the story instantly relatable to audiences across different regions.

Rather than relying solely on slapstick comedy, the film balances humour with social commentary, touching on family dynamics, personal boundaries, and community pressure. This mix has helped the movie resonate beyond its laughs, turning it into a shared conversation both online and offline.

Strong performances from the supporting cast also play a major role, giving the story depth and ensuring the comedy never feels one-dimensional.

Toyin Abraham’s Growing Box Office Influence

With Oversabi Aunty, Toyin Abraham continues a clear upward trajectory at the Nigerian box office. Over the past few years, her films have consistently drawn large cinema audiences, positioning her among a small group of Nollywood filmmakers whose names alone can drive ticket sales.

This latest record reinforces a growing trend in the industry: audiences trust Toyin Abraham’s storytelling instincts. Whether as an actress, producer, or creative lead, her projects tend to strike a balance between commercial appeal and cultural relevance.

With cinemas still showing the movie nationwide and no immediate slowdown in audience interest, Oversabi Aunty could push its total even further in the coming weeks.

Top 5 Domestic Box Office Results – Weekend

The domestic box office had a competitive weekend as big-budget sequels, fresh originals, and revived franchises battled for audience attention. Here’s how the Top 5 films performed in their opening weekend, based on early box office estimates.

1. Avatar: Fire and Ash — $40M

James Cameron’s Avatar franchise continues its box office dominance. Fire and Ash opens comfortably at number one with $40 million, reaffirming the brand’s strong pull with premium formats and franchise-loyal audiences. While not an explosive debut by Avatar standards, the opening positions the film well for a steady theatrical run.

2. Zootopia 2 — $19M

Disney’s long-awaited sequel lands in second place with $19 million. Zootopia 2 benefits from family appeal and nostalgia from the original film, though its opening suggests a more gradual rollout rather than a front-loaded debut. Expect stronger weekday and long-term performance driven by younger audiences.

3. The Housemaid — $14.8M

The psychological thriller The Housemaid surprises with a solid $14.8 million opening. In a weekend dominated by franchises, its performance shows there’s still strong demand for mid-budget adult-oriented films when the marketing connects with viewers.

4. Marty Supreme — $12.5M

Marty Supreme debuts with $12.5 million, a respectable result that reflects moderate audience interest. While it doesn’t break out immediately, its placement in the Top 5 suggests potential for word-of-mouth growth depending on audience reception in the coming weeks.

5. Anaconda — $10M

Rounding out the list is Anaconda with $10 million. The reboot leans heavily on brand recognition, and while its opening isn’t massive, cracking the Top 5 indicates enough curiosity to give the film a chance at staying power if international numbers and secondary markets perform well.

“Avengers: Doomsday” Predicted by Hollywood Experts to Be the Highest-Grossing Movie of 2026

Avengers: Doomsday – Marvel Studios’ next major Avengers film is emerging as the top pick among Hollywood insiders for the biggest global box office hit of 2026, according to a year end survey of more than 700 entertainment industry experts conducted by Bloomberg Screentime.

The poll asked industry professionals across distribution, production, exhibition, and film analysis to forecast which movie will earn the most at cinemas worldwide next year. Avengers: Doomsday was the most frequently selected title, suggesting strong early confidence in its commercial prospects.

Marvel’s Avengers franchise has a well-established track record of blockbuster success. Previous entries like Avengers: Endgame set historic box office records, making nearly $2.8 billion globally one of the highest total grosses of all time.

How Avengers: Doomsday Compares to Other 2026 Contenders

Although Avengers: Doomsday topped the expert poll, the 2026 film slate includes several other high-potential blockbusters that could break records:

  • The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
  • Spider-Man: Brand New Day
  • Toy Story 5

Betting-market odds and prediction platforms reflect this competitiveness: in some outlooks, Avengers: Doomsday trails titles like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in probability rankings for highest grossing film of 2026, even though it remains a strong prospect.

This highlights that while expert sentiment favors Doomsday, public and market expectations vary according to reports  and the box office race could shift as awards season and audience data roll in.

Forecasts from industry analysts paint 2026 as a potentially record-setting year for theatrical revenue. Independent box office forecasting suggests global ticket sales could reach roughly $35 billion  the highest total since before the pandemic.

If these predictions hold, Avengers: Doomsday could anchor a broader theatrical rebound driving attendance, strengthening franchise cinema, and affirming the continued value of big-screen releases fueled by the many speculations around the movie by the trailers recently released.
