Superman Advances to BAFTA 2026 Special Visual Effects Longlist (See List)

James Gunn’s Superman has officially advanced to the BAFTA 2026 Special Visual Effects longlist, marking a major early recognition for the film ahead of the upcoming awards season.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) confirmed that Superman is one of 10 films selected from a total of 71 submissions in the Special Visual Effects category. The longlist was determined by members of BAFTA’s SVFX chapter, made up of industry professionals working across visual effects and post-production.

Full BAFTA Special Visual Effects Longlist (2026)

The films advancing to the longlist are:

  • Avatar: Fire and Ash
  • F1
  • Frankenstein
  • How to Train Your Dragon
  • Jurassic World Rebirth
  • The Lost Bus
  • Mickey 17
  • Superman
  • Tron: Ares
  • Wicked: For Good

Making the BAFTA VFX longlist is a significant milestone. The selection indicates that Superman’s visual effects work has already been evaluated and endorsed by professionals within the VFX industry, rather than general voters or critics.

Unlike popularity based awards or fan-driven recognition, BAFTA’s VFX category is assessed primarily on technical execution, innovation, and craft. For Superman, this places the film in early contention among some of the most visually ambitious studio projects of the year.

The longlist places Superman alongside major franchise and effects-driven films, including:

  • Avatar: Fire and Ash, the latest installment in James Cameron’s visually groundbreaking series
  • Tron: Ares, a film built around digital environments and stylized effects
  • Jurassic World Rebirth, continuing the effects-heavy dinosaur franchise
  • Wicked: For Good, a large-scale musical adaptation with extensive CGI requirements

BAFTA’s Voting Process Explained

According to BAFTA, the process unfolds in stages:

  1. SVFX chapter members vote to determine the longlist and subsequent nominations.
  2. From the longlist, a smaller group of films will be selected as official nominees.
  3. In the final round, all film-voting BAFTA members vote to determine the category winner.

Historically, most films that secure nominations emerge from the longlist, making this step a crucial gateway rather than a symbolic mention.

Superman is the first major theatrical release under the new DC Studios leadership, with James Gunn also serving as co-head of the studio. While plot details and audience reception remain unknown, the BAFTA recognition suggests that the film’s technical and visual foundations are already being taken seriously within the industry.

While BAFTA recognition does not guarantee success at other awards ceremonies, the BAFTA VFX longlist often overlaps with later Oscar consideration in the Best Visual Effects category. Films that perform well at BAFTA frequently remain in the broader awards conversation as the season progresses.

Advancing to BAFTA’s Special Visual Effects longlist is a notable early achievement for Superman. In a field narrowed down from 71 submissions to just 10 films, the selection reflects industry-level confidence in the film’s visual work and technical ambition.

Top 5 Domestic Box Office Results – Weekend

The domestic box office had a competitive weekend as big-budget sequels, fresh originals, and revived franchises battled for audience attention. Here’s how the Top 5 films performed in their opening weekend, based on early box office estimates.

1. Avatar: Fire and Ash — $40M

James Cameron’s Avatar franchise continues its box office dominance. Fire and Ash opens comfortably at number one with $40 million, reaffirming the brand’s strong pull with premium formats and franchise-loyal audiences. While not an explosive debut by Avatar standards, the opening positions the film well for a steady theatrical run.

2. Zootopia 2 — $19M

Disney’s long-awaited sequel lands in second place with $19 million. Zootopia 2 benefits from family appeal and nostalgia from the original film, though its opening suggests a more gradual rollout rather than a front-loaded debut. Expect stronger weekday and long-term performance driven by younger audiences.

3. The Housemaid — $14.8M

The psychological thriller The Housemaid surprises with a solid $14.8 million opening. In a weekend dominated by franchises, its performance shows there’s still strong demand for mid-budget adult-oriented films when the marketing connects with viewers.

4. Marty Supreme — $12.5M

Marty Supreme debuts with $12.5 million, a respectable result that reflects moderate audience interest. While it doesn’t break out immediately, its placement in the Top 5 suggests potential for word-of-mouth growth depending on audience reception in the coming weeks.

5. Anaconda — $10M

Rounding out the list is Anaconda with $10 million. The reboot leans heavily on brand recognition, and while its opening isn’t massive, cracking the Top 5 indicates enough curiosity to give the film a chance at staying power if international numbers and secondary markets perform well.

‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’ Skips Theaters, Set for Exclusive Paramount+ Release in 2026

Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender will no longer be seeing Aang return to the big screen at least not in cinemas. Paramount has officially changed plans for The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, confirming that the animated movie will no longer receive a theatrical release. Instead, the film will now premiere exclusively on Paramount+ on October 9, 2026.

The decision marks a significant shift for one of the most beloved animated franchises of the 21st century and raises questions about the future of major animated releases in an era increasingly dominated by streaming platforms.

Originally announced as a wide theatrical release, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender was positioned as a major cinematic return to the Avatar universe. The film is being produced by Avatar Studios, the in-house studio formed by franchise creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, in partnership with Paramount.

However, new reports confirm that Paramount has scrapped its theatrical plans entirely, opting instead for a streaming-only debut on Paramount+. The October 9, 2026 date remains unchanged, but the distribution strategy has shifted.

Paramount has not publicly detailed the specific reasons for the move, but industry observers point to changing box office realities, rising production and marketing costs, and Paramount+’s need for exclusive franchise content as likely factors.

About The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender

The upcoming film is an animated continuation of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series, focusing on Aang in his later years, well after the events of the Nickelodeon classic that aired from 2005 to 2008.

While full plot details are still under wraps, the movie is expected to:

  • Explore Aang’s responsibilities as the Avatar in a more mature phase of his life
  • Expand the Avatar universe beyond the original TV series
  • Serve as a bridge between Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra

The project is part of a larger Avatar Studios roadmap, which includes multiple animated films and series set across different eras of the Avatar timeline.

Fan Reactions: Mixed Feelings

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among fans.

On one hand:

  • Some viewers welcome the convenience of a home release
  • Streaming ensures global accessibility on day one
  • The film may reach younger audiences more easily

On the other hand:

  • Many fans feel the Avatar universe deserves the cinematic experience
  • The move has been described by some as a “downgrade,” even if the production quality remains high
  • Concerns linger about whether streaming-first releases receive the same long-term cultural impact as theatrical films

Still, Paramount insists the decision does not reflect a lack of confidence in the project.

The decision to move The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender exclusively to Paramount+ reflects the realities of modern entertainment, where streaming platforms increasingly shape how stories are told and consumed.

While fans may miss the theatrical experience, the film’s arrival in 2026 still represents a major moment for the Avatar universe one that will bring Aang back into focus for a new generation, even if it happens from the comfort of home.

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Sets Global Box Office Ablaze With $345M Opening Weekend

James Cameron’s Avatar franchise has once again proven its box office power.

The third installment, Avatar: Fire and Ash, has debuted with a massive $345 million global opening weekend, officially becoming the second-biggest opening of 2025 so far.

A Strong Global Start

According to early box office reports, Avatar: Fire and Ash earned approximately $88 million from North America, while international markets contributed about $257 million, highlighting the franchise’s continued global appeal .

International territories once again played a major role in driving the film’s opening numbers, especially in key markets where the Avatar brand has historically performed well.

Second Biggest Opening of 2025

With its $345 million debut, Fire and Ash now ranks as the second-largest global opening of 2025, trailing only Zootopia 2, which currently holds the top spot for the year .

The achievement places Avatar: Fire and Ash ahead of several high-profile releases this year, confirming audience anticipation for the next chapter in Cameron’s sci-fi saga.

How It Compares to Previous Avatar Films

While the opening weekend is slightly below Avatar: The Way of Water, which launched with over $441 million globally in 2022, industry analysts note that the current performance still represents a very strong start, particularly given changing cinema attendance trends worldwide .

Box office observers expect the film to show strong legs in the coming weeks, especially in international markets where Avatar films traditionally enjoy extended theatrical runs.

The impressive debut of Avatar: Fire and Ash strengthens confidence in the future of the franchise, with additional sequels already planned.

The Avatar Universe is Getting a New Avatar…Element???

It’s been 20 years since Aang was discovered, the destined Avatar who was tasked to unite the four nations. Seven years later, it was Korra’s story, and now, 13 years later, that universe, which raised a generation, is getting another addition.

Nickelodeon has called on the original creators, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, to release another chapter to the Avatar Universe.

The new show will be ‘Avatar: Seven Havens,‘ a 26-episode, 2D animation currently in the works. Each season (aka books in Avatar) will be 13 episodes each produced by Avatar Studios. Other information like casting and premiere date is yet to be revealed.

“When we created the original series, we never imagined we’d still be expanding the world decades later,” DiMartino and Konietzko said in a joint statement. “This new incarnation of the Avatarverse is full of fantasy, mystery, and a whole new cast of amazing characters. Get ready to take another epic and emotional adventure!”

The Netflix live-action show ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ is expected to run for two more seasons. The show’s original creators, DiMartino and Konietzko, were originally expected to develop the show for Netflix, but that fell through due to creative differences.

In 2021, they returned to Nickelodeon to run Avatar Studios as co-chief creative officers and help build Avatarverse across film and TV.

A feature film for The Last Airbender focusing on the original series’ main character, Aang, is set for release in January 2026, starring Dave Bautista, Dionne Quan, Jessica Matten, Román Zaragoza, and Eric Nam.
