Burna Boy Presents Sócrates Award to Bukayo Saka at 2026 Ballon d’Or Ceremony

Nigerian music star Burna Boy presented the Sócrates Award to Arsenal and England forward Bukayo Saka at the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony in London on Monday, October 26.

The Grammy-winning singer took the stage at the London Palladium, where the prestigious football awards marked their 70th anniversary. Introduced by host Kate Scott as a “Grammy award winner and the king of Afro-fusion,” Burna Boy represented Nigeria at one of football’s biggest annual events.

Saka received the Sócrates Award in recognition of his humanitarian work, particularly his involvement with BigShoe, a charity that provides medical treatment for children in need.

Through the initiative, the Arsenal forward has helped fund life-changing surgeries for children across Africa, including Nigeria, his parents’ homeland. His contributions have also extended to humanitarian support for people affected by natural disasters.

Before presenting the award, Burna Boy spoke about his football academy in Nigeria and his ambition to see young Nigerian talent earn international recognition.

“Something I started a few years ago, just to support the football culture back home. Hopefully, inshallah, one day I’ll come back here to see one of my people getting an award in Ballon d’Or,” the singer said.

The academy reflects Burna Boy’s interest in supporting football development in Nigeria and creating opportunities for young players to pursue the sport.

Burna Boy was not the only Nigerian music star at the ceremony, as fellow singer Adekunle Gold also attended the 2026 Ballon d’Or awards at the London Palladium. His appearance added to the Nigerian representation at the event, which brought together prominent figures from music, football and entertainment.

Burna Boy’s presentation of the award brought together two prominent figures with Nigerian roots from the worlds of music and football.

The 2026 ceremony also marked a significant milestone for the Ballon d’Or, which was first awarded in 1956. Held in London for the first time, the 70th edition celebrated achievements across football while recognising contributions that extend beyond the pitch.
